重金屬音樂產生並流行予 60 年代，70 年代達到全盛時期。「齊柏林飛船」(Led Zeppelin)無疑是重金屬樂團的始祖，是華納旗下 1970 到 1980 間世界級的超級搖滾樂團，在英國專輯銷量僅次於披頭四(搖滾樂團的始祖)。吉他手 Jimmy Page 是搖滾史上屬一屬二的天才，也是「槍與玫瑰」(Guns N' Roses)的吉他手 Slash 最崇拜的偶像(雜誌票選樂史 50 大吉他 solo ，他─Slash 排名第二僅次於 Jimmy Page)。
1968 年 10 月成軍的 Led Zeppelin ，一直到 1980 年 12 月鼓手 John Bonham 死亡而宣佈解散，這個在 70 年代最具傳奇性的重金屬樂團共發行了整整十張專輯，在他們的故鄉英國，Led Zeppelin 所累積的唱片發行量僅次於披頭四，超過八千萬張，相當驚人。
「Stairway to heaven」(天堂之梯)──搖滾史上最有名的搖滾史詩，同時也是國外廣播電台有史以來播放次數最多的歌。而這張最受爭議性的作品，雖只攀升至第二名，卻在排行榜上停留了至少259週之久。
學生時代聽 ICRT 時，老外 DJ 常常會播放一首特別長的歌，雖然當時聽不懂歌詞內容，但是音樂本身具有一種說不出的意境，從開頭長笛伴奏的低緩神秘，到最後激昂的電吉他與狂野的 Vocal，好像長篇敘事三部曲。後來有機會聽到 Led Zeppelin IV 才恍然大悟原來這首歌就是被稱做「搖滾國歌」的「Stairway to heaven」(天堂之梯)......
